<o< Could you use the MDL0's from MH3 as base ideas for some designs? http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/MH3:_Gunner_Armors%2BThe gunner armors look better than blade IMO which is why its that link XD It wouldn't hurt to check out designs from other armors that were in other MH games :3 Those games also work in a similar layout that you pointed out in the OP so idk why I pointed out the obvious =P

My idea is to model parts (tops, bottoms, shoes, gloves, weapons, heads, hair, and accessories) and distribute them to be placed together and rigged. They'll be done by body types like marth, link, pit, zelda, etc.
the models will be distributed as a .dae in an .rar with its corresponding texture. the models within the .dae will be placed it its correct position within world space(so a shirt will be floating in its position, instead of at 0,0,0)
Its completely possible, my only question is about the max polycount. IS there one? if so, how do i find it/them. I'm looking forward to starting this project.
Any other experienced modelers are welcome to join the project.

im in on this... i have body models of SC4 "Create a Character" (both male and female) that ppl can use as a base

Admittedly, I probably wouldn't be able to help out with any of this, but I highly approve of it. Just the thought of being able to mix and match clothing and other accessories is just mindblowing, especially in terms of SSB!
I wish you guys the best of luck on this project, and hope it gets to see the light of day.

They'll be useful, but we wouldn't be able to use them as bases because of file size. Welcome to the team

Can we do Mix-And-Match parts for the N64 Custom Robos?
That was my next personal project anyway.

I hope these are some cool references too consider. Also, will skin changing be an option in this character creator?

I agree with DSX8's comment. Having a standard muscular male and female base is essential. Pit can be used for younger custom characters

I uploaded the accessories from Castlevania Judgement a while back, maybe they could be of use? http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=18184 I haven't gotten them to work in game though, but then again I haven't really been able to put that much time into it....but either way good luck with this, I can't wait to see Marth :O

so what your saying in the Op is that you want make a character creator using already made parts then be able to put them on a character in brawlbox without it messing up right (i think)
