I did not. I was going for more realism.

Her hair looks like it has some normal issues. Random dark spots.

I was never able to figure out how to fix that.

This is my first ever model, 3DS Max 2013. I'm wondering if there's anything I should be doing to make my life easier when I get to the importing stage.

Try to even out his arms so that they're completely horizontal instead of lowered like they are right now.
All Brawl models come in a very strict "T-Pose" so rotating the bones to match your model before you rig it is a real pain. Doing this will save you a lot of trouble.

Yeah the polys on the shoulder are very sloppy so I was going to redo them anyway.
I tried exporting as .obj and .dae, and Maya 2015 wouldn't read it. I used .fbx and got tons of errors and the normals were all over the place.
UV mapping has been a complete nightmare, as you can see I was very lazy with it just because I found it easier to model when it had some approximation of textures.
Is 3DS the best program for importing or is Maya comparable? I'm starting to prefer the Maya interface and I want to try animating it as well.

Well, you can definitely import from both, but transferring between the two might be a little bit of a pain.
I personally use Max for modeling so I can't help you quite as much, but I CAN say that Maya is definitely the best for animation.

Figured it doesn't hurt to post it here, too, now that I made more progress on it.
