but 3ds max 8 stopped working
i was trying to make Goku vertex to this:

If you have 3DS MAX 8, by all means, keep it. Taking 2010 over 8 won't make your vertex hacks better, anyway.

I've got a friendly suggestion: replace the chatroom lectures with written guides and tutorial videos. Hear me out on this:
I'm in college and I'm currently taking 2 online classes. These online classes include written lessons & readings (almost the same thing), video lessons, and assignments for me to turn in online. I LOVE online classes because there aren't any live lectures. This allows me to "go to class" any time I want. I think this is what you should be going for.
I totally support your vertex school, but many of us (myself included: I've got a 5:00 class on weekdays) just can't sign up for this because of schedule conflicts. I don't think a chatroom lecture is really necessary; the only advantage over a pre-written lesson is that you can ask questions live. In a straightforward subject like this, I don't see too many questions being asked. If anything, your students could simply send you a pm; they're going to do this anyway when they run into problems doing their "homework".
I know that replacing the chatroom with written lessons and videos would completely change your class, but it's a very efficient system that I assume most colleges are already using. You'll still have assignments and exams, but now you'll get MUCH more students. ;D

Just giving written lessons is also quite different in a way, since you need to be able to motivate yourself and do things on your own, instead of with the group. And if you have questions, you'll have to contact the teacher on your own, sometimes have to wait a long time, etc ... All of those damaging your motivation meter. .-.
I understand if some people can't attend all classes and wish to just get tutorials, but the interest of the class is that ... it's a class. .-.

Well, you make some good points but getting every single student together at the same time is just too inconvenient, and I've noticed a lot of posts saying "I really want this, but I can't attend every class".
Sure, you can ask questions live during a chatroom lecture, but I'm sure most students will have questions only once they've started working on their "homework". They're going to have to wait either way. This is a straightforward subject, so I don't see too many questions being asked anyway. Students with questions can simply ask around the forums (or use the search function if it's already been asked). Other students can help too, so it's not like there's only one person you can ask.
During lectures, I imagine Starwaffle will copy/paste bits of a pre-written lesson, wait about 2 minutes for questions to be asked, and then move on. This forces everyone to comprehend at the same speed; someone could easily get way behind. Students could just log in, not pay attention, and copy the entire lesson to read later. With this being the case, you may as well just give everyone the entire written lecture before or after each session.
What do you think, Starwaffle? The goal here should be to help out as much of the community as possible. If anything, why not just copy/record the entire chatroom session and give it to all students present and absent so that they can review it?. Why punish users (who really want to learn), just because they don't have flexible schedules?

I understand where you are coming from, I learn better by just reading instructions myself so I would for sure like to have just some videos and some homework for everyone to do on their own time. But you see, that's just not how i want to do it. I want it to be a live interactive class, where i can pick up on peoples problems and help them out the moment they happen. I know september 20th @ 5pm pst may not work for everyone, and that sucks but its the way this class is going to work. If you can't make it because you'd rather go hang out with friends or go to an actual school.... then quite frankly I don't want you in my class. ( hard to explain this but, If you chose real school over brawl mods, Then you probably won't be a huge contributor to the community, only releasing stuff when you have time off from school and friends. School and freinds are more important anyways. You don't need this as a distraction, it is very time consuming) I'd rather not waste my time on some people who MIGHT continue making things for the brawl modding community. I am looking for some devoted/motivated hobbyists here.
I am only one person and I will be working tremendously hard on this school to try and boost the quality and output of hacks on the vault. I am clearing my schedual to pass on my learning, If people don't show up on the day zero. It's my way of weeding out the casual passer-by-ers. I need to focus on the most motivated users on this forum!

You can maybe be a guest speaker for a portion of a class and give out a few tips or something, but I would like to handle all the teaching myself. I don't want any mixed signals or different styles of teaching. I need to hammer my method into their cores so everyone understands the basics of what I do, the way I do it. After that they can build on what they know!

Actually they can just look up a program called timestopper, which basically lets you reset the install date on any software to whatever day you want. Meaning you can essentially run the program in trial mode forever =3

I've tried that program once, and it made my trial time go from 25 days to 0 days. Besides, having to re-change the date every 30 days sounds like a bother to me. I generally do it the """clean way""" and activate the product like a good boy.
That counts for other programs as well. Some Trial versions are limited in functions anyway....

If by *clean way* you mean keygen, yeah, I prefer that way sometimes too, but only when there's a snowballs chance in hell that I'm gonna afford the program ( like I said 3DS Max is WAY over my budget....I could get a used/new golf cart for that much!) so if you have working keygens for 3DS Max 8 and 3DS Max 10 I'd apriciate it. You NEED different styles of teaching so that everyone that's here can put together what they like from whoever they like. That's how I came up with my drawing methods and some vertexing methods too.

Well thats just not the way It's gonna be happening in my class. Once people know and understand how I do things, they will be able to pick up their own styles and methods. I am trying to give them the basics. It would be too confusing to throw out a bunch of methods all at the same time. I need to make this as linear and simple as possible for the best results.

There's a lot of chances that it's going to work with 9 as well, yes. But 2008 ,2009 and 2010 have much less chances of working since they lack retro-compatibility with 8 and 9.
If you're in doubt, just try and do the steps in my tutorial up to step 8.
If the DAEs from COLLADA don't show up on step 7, or if mk64n's script causes an error on step 6, it means 3DS MAX 9 wasn't good.

Yes. ColladaMax = The COLLADA script/plugin for 3DS MAX.
The mariokart method works fine in 2008-2010, vertex wise anyway, I've tried it myself. Works great with less patching needed :D still need to patch stuff, but only annoying things (Like Links pouches X_X )

Except people had compatibility problems with 200X versions, and the very author of the script mentionned it wasn't compatible with these versions. Because the script for ColladaMax is supposed to be for 3DS MAX 8.
Dunno how you did to get it to work, if you found another download than my own for Colladamax 2010 or something. Or maybe you ere lucky, I don't know.

Items that take a lot of patches (Like links pouch, or his shields) only took 2 or 3 patches at the most.
And I just use it the way I normally would in 3DS Max 8, I don't know about anything past 10, but mariokart's method works just fine in 8-10
You have to have 3DS Max 8 installed as well, with the colladda plugin installed for that too, it may slow your comp down a little(Running other programs that demand a lot of memory I mean) but it's worth it ^+^
If 3DS Max 8 and 3DS Max 10 are installed, and you have collada max installed for both, then it'll work like normal =3 Also make sure to use BJ's latest brawlbox to do it.
I only use 3DS Max 8 to save my DAE as a .max file, then open it up in 10 and procede with mariokarts method as I normally would in 3DS Max 8. Works just fine from what I've done so far :)
Of course I'm doing all of this on a $1200 computer lol that may be part of it XP or not XD
Well, then it doesn't help new people much then. Since the main difficulty is mostly always to find 3DS MAX 8 anyway.
But I guess I'll remember that less patching trick and try it sometime.
I got my 3DS Max 8 the "unoficial" way (IE: Torrents) it's a pain to find it, let alone finding one that works, but it's worth it if you prefer 10 over 8 ya know? Pluss, BJ's importer only works with 10 anyway :D even though it's not entirely finished ^+^
Also, I made a full tutorial for how to do it, in case you ever get your hands on 3DS Max 8/Collada Max 8.

Well I DEFINATELY need to learn the retexturing methods :l
Especially if it involves editing UV's and stuff for that texture.
I won't be able to do half the characters I want to make without knowing that.
Also, could you make a sort of "texture map" for the characters? I mean of course, what parts of the actual image appear where in BB/Brawl. Not the UV's and stuff.
The only one I know by heart at this point is Mario and Luigi's, and that's not saying much X_X

Can I be a student? I get the basics of vertex editing I've done it before but I think the way how to do it has changed,and I'm kinda bad at it.
Question: for the class tomorrow, it says you only need to show up. Does this mean we will need to be able to access 3dsmax and all the other programs? I'm at my dad's whose computer is extremely slow with such programs, so if I need to go to my mom's/need 3dsmax or other CPU usage heavy programs, I'd like to know.
tomorrow is just attendance, I will just see who shows up.

So... Is anyone going to record StarWaffle's classes with a screen recorder? It sucks that some people willing to learn aren't able to attend. I would record them myself, but sadly, all of the screen recording software I've tried runs terribly on my computer. I could transcribe the classes if anyone cares.

Im sorry I could'nt make your first class. my mom had surgery, and I went to keep her company over night. And ofcourse all the wifi spots were password protected, anyway even though im expelled ill still show up for the other classes and attempt to learn some.

Just out of curiosity, what is considered to be the best version of 3DS Max for vertexing? I've heard numerous things, and I haven't been lurking enough recently to know definitively. With any luck I'll be able to learn something over Christmas Break or at least after my trebuchet is done for Physics.

I don't think anyone is even able to use all of its functionnalities for vertexing anyway.
If you're already very good at say 3DS MAX 2010 and don't want to use an outdated program to vertex, I suggest you just go ahead and use it, and that you follow NaruZeldaMaster's tutorial to vertex with it. (But you'll still need to use 3DS MAX 8 for a few steps.)
Otherwise, there isn't really any point to bother with 2 programs.
I've never made anything in it, but I use 9 since 8 was being mean to me >_>

Okay, so to anyone who has a link to the class, I will be teaching a lesson tomorrow at 4 pm pst ( which is 7 pm est for me) on how to port. not file renaming or .rel porting, but real porting. anyone that is in sw's class can come and ask question and stuff. you will need the following:
-brawl box
-the tabuu program
-This link with the list of bones (http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=258606)
-Fitcharacter.pac, fitcharacter00.pac, and fitcharactermotionetc.pac of the character you want to port and the character you want to port over
-a computer
i will start at 7:05 est. this is a once time class.

By real porting, you mean altering the Bonerefs and swaping the model?
liek changing the bone numbers, removing the snapback glitch. stuff liek that. well, how i do it anyway

I cant handle tuesday's sometimes bc I have too much hw from school, especially near the middle of the week. Star why cant you do the classes on the weekends, that could work out for people including me.

near the beginning of the thread. i think. might of been during class 0 that he said it.
anyway, class/the tutorial for porting is goign to be thursday 10-6-2011 at the same time as regular classes.
Because theres no school on weekends. ever. thats just cruel.
About homework, do we get a grade? or just something like "did it"and "did not do it"? Just curious
you will be graded on all your homework.

Tell that to the school where Solo & Ensemble was held last year. I guess if you get only 3 tardies you go to Saturday School (it was up on a sign in the classroom I performed in), which frankly is just Nazi-like.

Is there anyway to edit pac files and whatnot with Blender? I don't have admin, so I can't install 3DS Max, and there's no portable version of it :l
could i get a tutor for saturdays? Class starts at 12pm and ends at 2am and i have school at 9am so this class is becoming a bother to my studies :( am really dedicated though

Yes there is, look up for tutorials. I belive there was one called "vertexing with blender" somewhere, though im just telling by memory from the days I just learnt about hacking. Try a google search if you do not find it here.

I may hold a few mini-classes later on, if SW if okay with that. Mostly to give some additionnal tips and give a more personnalized approach on everyone's projects and problems. (Basically, help you make that first model that you really want to make.)
Because yesterday, I admit that I had to rush a bit sometimes. .-.
It'd probably be on a different schedule than the regular classes, though. 1 AM to 3 AM would be too hard for me to do several times. x.x
